Ganesh Chaturthi Story of Ganpati Birth

Ganesh Chaturthi - Vinayak Chaturthi - Ganesh Janmastami 

Ganesh Chaturthi is approaching. Ganesh Chaturthi 2011 Dates and Ganesh Visarjan Date. Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayak (another name of Lord Ganesha) is the birth date of  Lord Ganesha according to Indian Lunar Calendar.

Other popular names of Ganesha and their meanings.

Ganesha - It is compound of two words 1. Gana - means group or a system and 2. esha means God. So it can be interpreted as God of group or system of devas.

Ganpati - Again Gana plus Pati meaning ruler or lord.

Vinayaka and Vighnesha - meaning the remover or annihilator of obstacles.

Ekdanta - One with the one tusk.

Lambodara - One with a huge belly.

Story about the birth of form of Lord Ganesha

The story of birth of Lord Ganesha is well known among Hindus. Most probably listen to this story in their childhood. Lord Ganesh is the child of Lord Shiva and His divine consort Devi Parvati. Lord Shiva is the third in the Trinity of Hindu Gods Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva) is the lord of destruction. His consort Mata Parvati is Shakti (Cosmic energy) the divine cosmic energy which prevails everywhere and is infinite. Today, the scientists who have gone deeper into the matter, also have discovered that everything is pure energy. Nothing is static. To the gross eyes much looks static. Deep inside every thing is constantly moving.

Lord Shiva is mostly sat immersed in deep meditation in a solitary place. Some times He comes and visit His residential place. Ma Parvati spends the days with her female server. Once it happened that while Ma Parvati was taking a bath in pool, Lord Siva visited the house unexpectedly. Ma Parvati, did not like this. As lord Shiva's arrival is always unexpected, she began thinking of something to avoid this situation to happen again.

Creation of Lord Ganesha from mud

The mother of universe, she made a male doll out of scented mud. She than breath in the consciousness and life in it. The baby endowed with super powers, was named Ganesha. The little boy was thus the child of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati.

Feud between Lord Shiva and Ganesha

Mother divine use to ask Ganesha to guard the doors of house whenever she took bath. On on such instance Lord Shiva was seen approaching the doors by the boy Ganesha. Both the father and the son were unaware of their father-son relations as they were seeing each other for the first time. The faithful son of Maa Parvati stopped the intruder right at the door. The father was upset to see some kid stopping him to enter His own home.

After a few exchanging of dialogues Lord Shiva decided to get rid of the child with force. He gave this job to his warrior servants. They were no match with Lord Ganesha endowed with immense powers. Seeing this enraged Shiva. Realizing this was no ordinary kid stopping Him from entering his own house, he took up the fight. In rage, He cut off the head of the kid Ganesha, from his body.

When Maa Parvati came to know about this, she was grief stricken, at the loss of her son. In rage she decided to inflict destruction in entire universe. The angels (deva) and other different forms of God got very concerned over this idea of cosmic destruction. They rushed to Lord Shiva and with folded hands requested Him to do something, and pacify Mother Parvati's rage.

Lord Ganesha gets the head of an Elephant. 

Lord Shiva asked his servants to move towards north and bring the head of first living being they find. Accordingly, head of an elephant was brought by the servants. The head was then put on the body of Ganesha and was resurrected.

Ma Parvati was still not happy, the looks of Ganpati, elephant head on the human body, might not be liked by people. Lord Shiva gave a boon to Ganesha that Ganesha would be worshiped before any religious ritual or new undertaking. Ganesha will be most popular due to his boon for removing obstacles.
