Navratri is a Indian festival, one of spiritual and colorful Asian culture, celebrated all over India with great enthusiasm. Navratri means Nine nights.
Nava = 9 and ratri (ratri) meaning nights. Nine nights of festival for the people and Nine nights of great importance for devotees of Maa or Mataji (Divine Mother) (the female aspect of Divine) and spiritual seekers.

Navratri Date

The dates of Navratri are determined by the Hindu Lunar calendar. It begins with the begining of Ashwin month that is, first of Ashwin is the first day of Navratri and 9th day of Ashwin is the last night of Navratri. The tenth day is Dussera or Vijayadashmi is also a very auspicious day and celebrated on large scale. So there are 10 continuous days of celebrations with the start of Ashwin month.

According to Roman calendar the Navratri Date 2009 is 19th September 2009, which is Saturday. So the first day of Navratri in 2009 is 19th September and the last ninth day is 27th September. Dussera or Vijayadashmi date 2009 is 28th September.

Navratri in Gujarat

Navratri is one of the most loved festivals in Gujarat. Apart from the Bhakti (Devational) aspect of the nine days and nights of devotion and spiritual rituals. The festival is celebrated with traditional ritual dances called garbas, raas and dandiya. People dressed in vibrant color clothes, appear in huge numbers at so many different venues to take part in the festival of music and dance.

Navratri Raas Garba

In huge grounds and open spaces at various locations in cities and villages of Gujarat, the celebrations take place. In the centre of the ground, a picture or idol of divine mother is placed. Aarti of Divine Mother is performed in the beginning. After the aarti traditional and modern songs, called garba songs are played. Various people from various locations starts the dance in choreographic pattern. It looks amazing to see so many dancers, dancing together in concentric circles. Waves of dancers moving in circles. For nine full days people celebrate Navratri dancing for about 3 or more hours each night.

In most cities raas garba teaching classes starts operating before a month of Navratri, which teaches steps of raas garba dance. The garba lovers, flock to these dancing classes to learn and take lessons in Garba steps and dances.

The garbas and raas, the traditional dances of Navratri are so popular among the Gujaratis that most of the weddings has a separate day just for raas garba.
